Toronto Maple Leafs select Matt Lahey 200th overall in the 2024 NHL Draft

With the 200th overall selection the Leafs grabbed defenceman Matt Lahey. The pick originally belonged to the Ottawa Senators.

Lahey is a big left shot defenceman, standing at 6 ‘4”, who played with the Nanaimo Clippers of the BCHL. Committed to Clarkson University, Lahey will be beginning his NCAA career next season.

Analysing the pick

Under GM Brad Treliving it was expected the Leafs would have an added focus on bigger defencemen, Lahey certainly fits that bill. Lahey will look to join an influx of talent at the position. 

What’s next for Matt Lahey

Lahey will move onto the NCAA next season, and will likely spend two to 3 seasons at Clarkson University before any professional consideration for the Toronto Marlies. As any late round pick, Lahey is a long term project and a relative long shot to become an NHL regular at some point.
