Early on in free agency, news broke that the Toronto Maple Leafs have signed goaltender Anthony Stolarz to a two-year contract with an AAV of $2.5M.
This was a position the Maple Leafs needed to fill a hole in. Having a solid, reliable back-up goalie, or even one who could act as a 1B when needed, will help their success. Especially with the improved defence centred around the Chris Tanev signing.
Who is Anthony Stolarz?
Stolarz comes to Toronto fresh off of a Stanley Cup win with the Florida Panthers last season. He had incredible numbers for a backup, playing in 27 games with a GAA of 2.02 and SV% of .925. Through his career, he has shown to be one of the better backups around the league.
Those numbers aren’t a huge anomaly for him either, as he had been putting up more than respectable numbers in previous seasons while playing with some Anaheim Ducks teams that were not goalie friendly environments.
Stolarz is a guy who uses his size to his advantage. At 6’6″, 240 pounds, he can cover a lot of the net without even trying. But his size does not come with major negative impacts on his mobility.
