It’s the busiest time of the NHL offseason, as we’ve had the 2024 NHL Draft, free agency, and now development camps opening up across the league.
Hayley Wickenheiser and her staff are in charge of running the Toronto Maple Leafs development camp, which started with medicals on Tuesday and on-ice sessions the rest of the week.
Some big names
With players from as far back as the 2020 NHL Draft, and as new as this year’s first-round pick Ben Danford, 17 Maple Leafs picks (six from this year) will take part.
Braeden Kessler, Jacob Quillan, and Cade Webber, who all have NHL deals, will be at the camp, along with 22 free agents, headlined by Quinn Hutson.
Hutson has 64 points in 79 career NCAA games, and is the brother of highly-touted prospect Lane Hutson.
Brandon Lisowsky was originally drafted by the Leafs, but saw his rights expire without a contract. Back at camp, he’ll be motivated to prove himself to the organization.
Nikita Grebenkin, Easton Cowan, and Fraser Minten are the headliners, each established prospects. Cowan and Minten especially could challenge for NHL roster spots during training camp, and will surely get the most attention for the next couple of days.
In net, Artur Akhtyamov is the name to watch. He’ll be a Marlie in 2024–25, and was astounding in the VHL last season, winning the league’s goalie of the year and playoff MVP.
