Reviewing the Toronto Maple Leafs’ 2024 Halloween costumes

Halloween has now come and as always the NHL saw some super creative fits by its players. Whether it was members of the Los Angeles Kings dressing as the iconic 90’s rap group NWA or Minnesota Wild goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury channelling his inner McLovin, there were some very creative costumes this year and that was no different at the Toronto Maple Leafs’ annual Halloween party. Multiple Leafs players dressed up for the spooky occasion with many knocking it out of the park.

With that, let’s review the most notable costumes we saw.

Some magic from the Swedes and Czechs

The Harry Potter books and films are huge in pop culture and clearly in Sweden too as Calle Jarnkrok, Pontus Holmberg, Oliver Ekman-Larsson and the now-traded Timothy Liljegren, along with respective spouses, went as various student wizards from the four Hogwarts houses. William Nylander also appeared to be part of the group, but he was just dressed in regular attire apart from his large gold chain. Perhaps he picked it up from a vault at Gringotts Bank. Either way, the group looked truly magical.

Forward David Kampf continued this wizarding trend as well. He went as Hogwarts’ headmaster Dumbledore and was accompanied by his wife, Eliska, as Professor McGonagall and their son as Harry Potter himself. While Kampf is far younger than Dumbledore, he definitely looked the part with a white flowing wig and beard to complete the look.

Costumes from comedy classics

There were a few groups on the team that went the comedic film and television route. The first of these was Bobby McMann and his partner who went as figure skaters Chazz Michael Michaels and Jimmy MacElroy from the hit comedy Blades of Glory. Of course, since the Leafs’ Halloween party was on solid ground and not ice, the two opted for rollerblades instead of actual skates.

Going for a more sport-oriented comedy, defenceman Jake McCabe and his wife went as Squints and Wendy Peffercorn from the comedic baseball classic, The Sandlot. While definitely a more simple costume, the pair looked exactly like their film counterparts and definitely knocked this fit out of the park.

On the television end, and possibly one of the funniest of the Leafs’ costumes, was Nick Robertson and his partner who went as Dwight Schrute and Angela Martin from the hit American comedy, The Office. While his partner totally nailed the look of Angela minus a lack of blonde hair, Robertson looked absolutely hilarious as the iconic Dwight, complete with his staple yellow shirt, tie and glasses.

Rounding it off with Beetlejuice, a sleepy guy, and the Sith lord captain

These last three sets of costumes don’t really share a common thread but they are all hilariously brilliant nonetheless. To start, defenceman Morgan Rielly and his wife, Olympic gold medalist figure skater Tessa Virtue, went as Beetlejuice and Lydia from the cult classic horror/comedy Beetlejuice. The two went all out on this getup, with Rielly specifically wearing a whole lot of face makeup to pull off the iconic look.

Max Domi and his partner, Estelle, took things back to their youth with Estelle dressing as the Tooth Fairy, complete with a dress, tiara, and tooth wand, and Domi going with a simple, yet effective, sleepy boy costume. The costume was made even more funny given Domi’s missing front teeth. Whether he got some money under his pillow or not is unknown.

Finally, the Leafs’ captain Auston Matthews went the tragic villain route as the Sith lord himself, Darth Vader. Matthews looked truly sinister behind the mask complete with a red lightsaber to boot. The captain definitely stood out amongst the squad with his Star Wars fit and maybe he can use the force in some upcoming games to help the Leafs climb the Atlantic Division standings.
