Ryan Reaves will be sitting for a while as he has just received the verdict from his hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety. The Toronto Maple Leafs forward will be suspended five games for his illegal check to the head on Edmonton Oilers defender Darnell Nurse on Saturday evening.

In the second period of the early game on Hockey Night in Canada yesterday evening, Reaves delivered a head shot to Nurse, leaving the Oilers defender dazed and bloodied on the ice. The hit was high and caught Nurse in the head with his shoulder.
Reaves was subsequently assessed a five minute major on the play and given a match penalty upon review, ending his night. Nurse was also held out of the remainder of the game, though his status moving forward is currently unknown.
Will this impact the Maple Leafs gameplan?
So far this season, Reaves has played in most of Toronto’s games, 16 of the team’s 19. Though in those games, he averages just 7:51 of ice time. Ultimately, the Maple Leafs’ gameplan will not be significantly affected with Reaves’ absence.
Reaves will be eligible to return to the lineup on December 4th against the Nashville Predators.
