Analyzing the pick

I had a feeling the Leafs would take a Flint Firebird in this draft with the Blake Smith signing, and the fact that Sam McCue and Braeden Kressler have been with the OHL outfit as well. They take one here with 6’4″ RHD Rylan Fellinger. Unranked for me (not in the top 160), but he’s a very classic Treliving-esque dart throw.

Big, decently mobile, and physical, Fellinger needs to work on his breakout passes at the next level and his general confidence on the puck. Not a ton of high-end traits here, but his size and length will at least give him a shot.

What’s next for Fellinger

Fellinger will return to the OHL with Flint, where he may see an opportunity for a bigger role as names like Blake Smith on the back end are going pro. We’ll have to wait and see if he can develop his tools as a passer or if he tops out as a very good OHL-level defender.
