The Toronto Maple Leafs were looking to build off of their big win over the Washington Capitals and had the task of playing host to the Edmonton Oilers. Despite these two teams meeting only twice per year, it had a big game feel to it from start to finish.
Beyond wanting to win and get the two points, the Leafs also wanted to play spoiler and prevent Zach Hyman from reaching 50 goals on the season. He came into the game with 48 goals and his former team was going to do everything they could to stop him from getting his next two.

Game events
- The Leafs were outshot 29–39, but they already had a five-goal lead after two periods and didn’t really need to look for offence as the game wore on.
- Toronto put up 28 blocks which definitely helped in slowing down Edmonton’s offence.

- Pontus Holmberg and Bobby McMann both had two-goal nights as they were instrumental in the win.
- As mentioned, Hyman scored his 49th goal to some fanfare from both Leafs and Oilers fans in the crowd.
- All four goalies played in the game: Stuart Skinner was replaced by Calvin Pickard after two periods, while Ilya Samsonov was injured attempting to make a save on Leon Draisaitl’s goal which saw Martin Jones come in.
- Auston Matthews picked up goal #58 with the empty-netter.

- The Leafs scored early and often in the first two periods. They were leading virtually the whole game and the game-winner was scored midway through the second frame by Holmberg.
- As Edmonton pushed back in the third period, the Leafs banked on their five-goal lead to be a big enough cushion. The Leafs didn’t take many shot attempts in the third, especially not in the final 10 minutes.
- The Leafs’ offence was highly efficient as they got four goals from right in front of the net.
- They funnelled a lot of their shots to the high-danger areas and opted for more shots from angles throughout the game.
- Toronto’s defence was good at scattering Edmonton’s offence as the Oilers were shooting from anywhere they could.
5v5 Corsi
- The Leafs potted four goals at 5v5 and gave up zero. That’s a good result any night but an especially great one against the Oilers, as Edmonton is one of the better 5v5 teams in the league.
- Looking at the shot charts at 5v5, the Leafs were able to get past Edmonton’s defence as a good percentage of their shots came from in close—and they got three goals right in front of the net.
- On the other end of the ice, the Leafs were great at preventing high-danger chances against them. The Oilers barely had any shots in the slot at all and Samsonov’s job was quite easy at even strength.
