Maple Leafs extend Simon Benoit for three years at $1.35M

The Toronto Maple Leafs have announced they have signed defenceman Simon Benoit to a three-year contract extension. Benoit will make $1.35M a year for the next three seasons starting in 2024-25.

A key member of the Leafs blueline

Benoit has been a key part of the Leafs’ defence core this year, playing 54 games for the club with five points and a +5 rating to go along with 44 PIMs.

Toronto signed Benoit last offseason to a one-year deal worth $775k. He was set to be an RFA at the end of this season.

Benoit was sent to the AHL after training camp, but after a slew of injuries to Maple Leafs defencemen, was juggled between the minors and the NHL until Nov. 27. He’s been with the Leafs since.

He’s spent most of the year playing beside Jake McCabe, but has played significant minutes with Conor Timmins and William Lagesson as well.

Since the trade deadline, Benoit has had a harder time getting into the lineup, but as the Leafs D-core continues to pile up injuries, he’ll see more ice time moving forward.

Good work by Brad Treliving

It’s tidy work from Brad Treliving, locking down a solid depth defenceman for three years after signing him to a buriable contract in the summer. Benoit’s performance this year has earned him the raise.

Undrafted out of the QMJHL, Benoit’s career started with an AHL contract with the San Diego Gulls. He’s played in 191 NHL games across four seasons.
