Toronto Maple Leafs

The 6’3 KHL star the Toronto Maple Leafs must sign to save their centre depth

The Toronto Maple Leafs have a lot of work to do to retool the roster this offseason, and international free agent Vitali Pinchuk should be at the top of their list of targets.

The Leafs need to be creative in finding the right kind of players to add to the current core group, looking to bounce back after a season that will hopefully be viewed as a blip rather than the start of a trend.

Trades, the draft, and free agency will all need to be maximized to add the right players and strengthen a roster that the majority of players won the Atlantic Division together just one year ago.

This will also include expanding the team’s horizons in terms of scouting, and bringing in the top free agent outside of North America could be just one of the moves that take the team in the right direction.

Vitali Pinchuk: A late bloomer

Some European players take time to develop into the player they can be, and that is certainly the case for Vitali Pinchuk.

He originally went undrafted, having played for the Kingston Frontenacs during the ill-fated 2019–20 OHL season, which was curtailed by the COVID-19 pandemic. That year, he had 13 goals and 34 points in 54 games. He also represented his country at the World Juniors Division 1A, scoring two goals and two assists in five games.

With the OHL cancelling the 2020–21 season in its entirety, Pinchuk took his talents back to his native Belarus, where he joined Metallurg Zhlobin. His play in his country’s domestic league (38GP – 10G, 15A) earned him a handful of games in the KHL with Dinamo Minsk.

It took him some time, but six seasons later, he is now one of the league’s star players, finishing sixth in total points with 31 goals and 35 assists in 65 regular-season games. He also added seven points (two goals, five assists) in eight playoff games.

Now, at the age of 24, Pinchuk looks ready to take the next step in his career and test himself in the NHL after stepping up and showing what he could offer teams in North America.

Vitali Pinchuk is perfect for the Toronto Maple Leafs

For the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vitali Pinchuk could be the perfect addition that helps the team get back on track and head in the right direction.

First and foremost, the Leafs need to strengthen through the middle, and Pinchuk is a centre. He has been improving year over year and has shown good competence in the faceoff circle. Over the past four seasons, Pinchuk has averaged a 52.08% success rate. During this time, he has faced more and more draws, growing from 544 to 1174 between 2022–23 and 2025–26.

Pinchuk is a big-bodied player, standing at 6-foot-3 and 203 lbs, and he regularly gets to the net. He is a good shot, averaging around 15% shooting over the past two seasons, and is capable of scoring at both even strength and on the power play (37 to 18 since 2024).

He is definitely a skill player with a lot of offensive upside, preferring to outskill opponents on the ice rather than play a physical style. Yes, Pinchuk rarely hits opposing players, but he has blocked 70 shots over the past two seasons, so he wouldn’t be a defensive liability.

The Leafs situation

John Tavares has been a stellar player for the Leafs and has stepped up whenever the team has needed him, putting up back-to-back 70+ point seasons. Despite this, he is approaching 36 years old, and he may be better deployed as a third-line centre with time on the first power play unit next season, targeting his still-elite offensive capabilities.

Adding Pinchuk would give the team someone who could fill that 2C role. It may take some adjustment to get Pinchuk used to the NHL, so he could begin the year pencilled in as the Leafs’ 3C but could grow into the 2C role by the mid-way point and go from there.

There’s also the fact that he would have to sign an entry-level contract in the NHL, which comes with a maximum cap hit of $1.025 million for the 2026–27 season. Having a top-six forward earning so little for a year could allow whoever takes over as the team’s GM the opportunity to spend money throughout the lineup and strengthen across all areas.

Pinchuk still being a restricted free agent once the ELC expires would also go in the Leafs’ favour, as they would be in a stronger negotiating position when he looks to secure a longer-term deal, assuming he shows enough in his rookie NHL campaign.

Pinchuk could be a massive boost

Having a lineup of Auston Matthews, Vitali Pinchuk, and John Tavares down the middle would give the Leafs some much-needed strength and a solid group to continue building around, with enough cap space this offseason to genuinely bolster everywhere.

If the Leafs could also add a genuine offensive talent in the draft (if they keep their pick), there’s a chance results could turn around very quickly, and the team could get back to competing for the playoffs right out of the gate.

A stronger centre corps is necessary for the Toronto Maple Leafs to succeed moving forward, and Vitali Pinchuk could be the ideal target that starts the retool in the right way.

One Comment

  1. Tavares needs to move to wing as he doesn’t have the speed to play center anymore, hence his -27. In any case, the Leafs will need 2-3 centers for next season. The Leafs will need to take approaches like this in order to be competitive next season. Pinchuk may be good enough to play a bottom 6 role now but who knows if he’ll even stick in the NHL. May be worth a try though!
