One of the stranger tenures in Leafs history has come to a close as the Leafs traded Brandon Carlo to the St. Louis Blues. The trade is a bit sad, representing a big loss of assets for only a bit more than one season of Carlo.
Terrible asset management by the Toronto Maple Leafs
The Leafs acquired the two third round picks, 73rd and 76th overall, in the 2026 draft. This is a huge difference from the first round pick and Fraser Minten, the package former GM Brad Treliving paid to acquire Carlo at the 2025 trade deadline.
Carlo is a UFA at the end of the 2026-27 season. The trade is a part of the Leafs plan to revitalize their blueline, which clearly places an emphasis on adding more puck moving options. In a vacuum the move is disappointing, though the Leafs plans for the rest of the offseason might recontextualize the efforts to retool the lineup.
