Breaking: Toronto Maple Leafs sign Jack Roslovic to a two-year deal worth $8M

Forward Jack Roslovic is the newest member of the Toronto Maple Leafs on a two-year deal worth $8M total.

He’s a right-handed centre/winger who can put up points, which is what Toronto needs, but doesn’t do well in his own zone. He also has a history with Auston Matthews, playing in the U.S. development program.

Roslovic spent last year in Edmonton, putting up 36 points in 69 games.

More forward depth

Roslovic should fit into the middle-six in Toronto, though his chemistry with John Tavares or Matthews will likely determine his spot in the lineup.

His defensive impact is minuscule. He’s not good in his own zone and will not be able to play on any checking line. That makes the signing a bit confusing for the price; he’s not coming to Toronto on a discount and doesn’t help their bottom-six get tougher.

Hopefully, he produces points on a sheltered line for the Leafs. We’ll see what else John Chayka gets to today, but this signing is a bit out of left field.
