Veteran defenceman Mark Giordano made his return to action after missing the past few weeks with a concussion. As fate would have it, he’d be the player to score the game’s first goal to start the Leafs on their path to victory.

- The Leafs amazingly doubled up the Capitals in shots on goal. To be fair, 24 shots from Washington isn’t exactly a low total. It’s just the Leafs managed 48 shots of their own.
- Toronto had the edge in faceoff and hits as well.

- Tyler Bertuzzi scored the game-winner 18 seconds into the middle frame and added an insurance marker midway through the third for a two-goal night.
- Bobby McMann scored again, whose season story has been a very bright spot for the Leafs.

- The Leafs started pulling away in shot attempts toward the end of the first period and continued to push ahead for the remainder of the game.
- With only three total penalties, the game was relatively clean. Toronto had a good boost from their lone power play and scored shortly after, whereas the Capitals were not able to generate much on their two chances.
- The Leafs had a game plan of getting into high-danger areas and they executed it very well. They had the lion’s share of net-front shots and converted from in-close for multiple goals.
- Toronto’s defence played a strong game as well as they didn’t give up too many high-danger chances to the Capitals.
- Joseph Woll played a great game and stopped most of the shots he faced, putting another bullet point onto his resume to be Toronto’s Game 1 starter.
5v5 Corsi
- As mentioned, most of the game was played at 5v5.
- All five of Toronto’s goals were at 5v5 as was Washington’s single goal.
- Again, it was a clean game for Toronto at evens and their propensity for high-danger shots helped them dominate the 5v5 game.
