  • The Leafs used the first 40 minutes to get their goal scoring out of the way as they spent the third period fending off the Panthers’ comeback attempt. Up 5–1 to enter the third period, the Panthers drew within one goal late in the third before Matthews scored the empty-netter to seal the win.

All situations Corsi

  • The Leafs were able to take advantage of leaky goaltending to build their lead. Toronto never had a stretch of play where they dominated on offence, but their goals were more than sufficient in building momentum.
  • The game had seven power plays, yet every goal (except the empty-netter) was scored at 5v5.
  • The shot plot explains why the Leafs were able to score so many goals on so few shots. Every goal came from in close. That’s a high-danger offence that took their ability to get into the net-front areas and converted on them.
  • The Panthers had a different offence with fewer of their chances coming from in front of the net.
  • Interestingly, the Panthers almost had two straight lines of shots that formed an overall V shape.

5v5 Corsi

  • More than a quarter of the game was played away from 5v5 when you account for penalties and the empty net.
  • However, the Leafs had a better game considering they were playing with the lead and were still able to push the pace.
  • It wasn’t until the third period when Toronto switched gears to defending the lead.
  • You can’t ask for a better display of goals at 5v5 from the Leafs.
  • Neither team took many shots from afar, but Toronto was able to get the lion’s share of high-danger chances while not giving up much to the Panthers.
