All situations Corsi

  • As mentioned, the Leafs were in the penalty box five times. This made the ice tile heavily in Pittsburgh’s favour as their power play is excellent at generating shots.
  • However, Ilya Samsonov was the Leafs’ best penalty killer as he was flawless when Toronto was shorthanded. Instead, the Leafs scored the game’s only power play goal.
  • The Leafs had a good number of high-danger shots and were able to score from in close on two goals.
  • The first saw Matthew Knies being in a perfect spot to tip in a pass to the crease from T.J. Brodie—who’s been excellent since returning from being healthy scratched.
  • The second came in overtime where a miscommunicated line change for the Leafs turned into a broken play where Jake McCabe was able to walk right in to score.

5v5 Corsi

  • At 5v5, the game was much closer, and in fact the Leafs controlled most of the 5v5 play throughout the game.
  • Toronto didn’t have a full two minutes of 5v4 play at all as their first power play was sandwiched by Penguins power plays and their second lasted mere seconds before Matthews scored.
  • The Penguins had a strong push to get the tying goal.
  • Shot locations were more even at 5v5 and both teams had good systems to get slot chances. Both Samsonov and Alex Nedeljkovic played well at even strength as they both faced high volumes of good scoring chances.
