Maple Leafs Fan Therapy vol. 15: Team Canada’s loss hurts a ton

We can’t have nice things. Arguably, the worst possible outcome happened today. The Americans won the Olympic Gold Medal in overtime over Canada. Not a single person who watched the game today would say the Americans deserved to win, and yet they did. Team Canada lost, and Auston Matthews beat them.

I’m going to be a sore loser, and this post will be political. I don’t care. Evil won today, and we need to say it.

Such a tough loss

This tournament was never just about sports. The decision to allow the NHLers to play in these games set up this final years ago. The 4 Nations: Face-Off only threw gasoline on the fire. Canada coasted through the round robin, looking every bit like the dominant hockey force that they are. They faced adversity in the medal rounds, coming from behind twice to make the gold medal game.

The gold medal started the same as the previous two. The Americans got a goal early and took the lead. However, starting roughly 10 minutes into the game, Canada started to dominate. For over 40 minutes, Canada was by far and away the best team. Cale Makar scored early in the second to tie it up, the only blemish on Connor Hellebuyck’s night.

He is the only reason the US won this game. End of story. The Americans were on their heels the entire game, and it was Canada who lost, not the other way around.

The impact of the game

There is nothing redeemable about today. There is no silver lining. We were the better team? Canada lost. We dominated the entire tournament? Canada lost. It does not matter, because for the next four years, the Americans are the gold medal winners.

This game meant more than just hockey. This game felt like a national battle. The captain of the Ottawa Senators, the capital of Canada, said he “hates Canada.” The rhetoric surpassed friendly banter and chirping. The face of the team, a face truly made for radio, Matthew Tkachuk has effusively praised Donald Trump on multiple occasions.

The Americans did not deserve to win this game. Both because of the hockey, and because the Americans do not deserve to win anything ever. And we know that they are going to be insufferable about this, because they are insufferable about everything. One only needs to look at the truly hilarious Twitter compilations of Americans posting their loss from the 4 Nations as an “own.”

Being a sports fan can suck

I haven’t even started to talk about the refs in this tournament. Holy hell, we thought NHL reffing was bad? (Ignoring the fact that the referees of this tournament were NHL refs!) That too many men missed call (AGAIN!) is going to haunt my nightmares forever.

Man, that sucked so much. At least we don’t have to cheer for Brady Tkachuk tomorrow, god what a tough face to look at. As Leafs fans, we do have to live with the fact that our captain also captained our antagonists’ team to victory over us. But, luckily, Auston did not put his foot in his mouth at multiple points this tournament. He also had a very good tournament, hopefully setting up a good close to the season.

I don’t really have many more words to say. Canada should have won, and they didn’t. Add it to the list of things going wrong in the world.

  1. You are a complete disgrace. Evil won? You should be fired immediately for that comment alone. Americans are insufferable? You are insufferable you big baby. It was a hockey game. Canada lost. Yet you need to attack the entire country of the USA. I hope you are fired.
